Timur Bekmambetov’s sci-fi thriller Mercy has led the North American box office. The Amazon MGM picture took $11.2 million in the US on its opening weekend. That was enough to overtake Avatar: Flame and Ash ($7 million). The film cost $60 million to make. International territories added another $11.6 million, for a worldwide total of $22.8 million. The lead roles are played by Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson. The story follows a policeman accused of killing his wife. Over 90 minutes the hero must prove his innocence to a judge powered by artificial intelligence. Critics panned the film (21% on Rotten Tomatoes).
