James Wan announces plans to direct a new "Saw" film

The legendary horror franchise “Saw” is gearing up for a return. At the Sundance Film Festival, its creators—director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell—announced they are working on a new film that will serve as a “spiritual successor” to the 2004 original. The announcement came during a special screening of the first “Saw”, which premiered at the same festival twenty years ago. Wan and Whannell shared memories of nervously waiting in the theatre lobby for the first audience’s reaction. “All I can say at this point is that we’re going to do it again. We’re going to make another one,” said James Wan, avoiding specifics. “I don’t want to say too much. It’s still very early.” The new project’s key idea is a return to the roots. “We want to get back to the spirit of the original film,” Wan stressed. “And make another scary ‘Saw’ movie.” He promised to respect the complex mythology built across nine sequels that explored Jigsaw’s past and his early traps. No release date has been announced yet, but one thing is clear: the filmmakers intend to reboot the franchise with a focus on the horror element rather than further expanding the plot’s universe.
