Conclave Director Edward Berger to Make Netflix Film About Stradivari

Edward Berger, director of the Oscar-winning drama “All Quiet on the Western Front” and upcoming Vatican thriller “Conclave,” is already lining up another project after his new film “Riders” with Brad Pitt for A24. According to industry sources, Berger and playwright Itamar Moses, a Tony winner for “The Band’s Visit,” have sold a screenplay titled “Stradivari” to Netflix.

Berger is attached to direct “Stradivari,” which will be set in 18th-century northern Italy and focus on the rivalry between two of the world’s greatest violin makers as they compete to create the perfect instrument. The story promises a blend of historical drama, artistic obsession and workshop intrigue against the backdrop of the golden age of violin making.

The filmmaker currently has several projects in various stages of development, and not all of them may reach production. Berger remains on board as director of the next Jason Bourne film and is also attached to an untitled time‑travel drama starring Austin Butler, though that project is unlikely to move forward in the near future due to the actor’s busy schedule.
